Castle Rock Sedation Dentistry
Schedule Your AppointmentFor many people, the thought of visiting the dentist causes feelings of panic and dread. In some cases, this anxiety results in a paralyzing fear that prevents those individuals from obtaining necessary oral care.
Researchers have concluded that as many as 15 percents of all Americans have some form of dental anxiety. Fortunately for these patients, intravenous sedation (IVS) is available. Because oral care professionals must administer IVS with extensive specialized training, not all dental practices offer this form of sedation.
At Castle Rock Dental Health, we are happy to provide sedation dentistry in Castle Rock, and we invite you to read on to learn more about IVS and how it is used in our practice.
IV Sedation Dentistry Overview
IVS is an ideal method for relaxing anxious patients, helping them achieve a level of calm so that they remain tranquil enough for any needed dental procedure to be performed. Keep in mind; this is not the same as the full sedation experienced with complete anesthesia.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation is available in several forms. For example, most people are familiar with nitrous oxide, commonly called “laughing gas.” It is administered through a mask and inhaled and is a mild, effective way to calm anxious patients. However, some patients respond better to IV sedation, which is, as the name implies, administered intravenously.
Benefits of IV Sedation
IVS is fast-acting, dosages can be easily adjusted for each patients’ needs, and the sedative impact lasts for extended durations to accommodate more involved dental procedures.
Preparing for IV Sedation
Before IVS, patients should refrain from consuming any foods or beverages for at least eight hours before their procedure. Additionally, because the effects of the sedation drugs cause significant drowsiness and take time to wear off, patients should not drive after their procedure and should arrange for transportation home. Patients should also be aware that sedation drugs could interact with some medications. Therefore, it is important to inform our staff of any prescription or over-the-counter medicines that you are taking.
Is IV Sedation Right for You?
Not everyone is a solid fit for IVS. Older individuals and those with certain health issues may not be suitable candidates for the procedure. If you’re interested in learning more about IVS and whether it is an option for you during your next dental procedure, call our office today.
